Orlando Health — Health Central Hospital has unveiled its first-ever comprehensive Limb Preservation Program, designed to support patients at risk of limb loss. This new initiative aims to prevent serious, life-altering emergencies by offering proactive and specialized care to individuals with conditions like peripheral artery disease, critical limb-threatening ischemia, and vascular issues.
Multidisciplinary Team to Deliver Comprehensive Limb Preservation Care
The Limb Preservation Program at Orlando Health — Health Central Hospital brings together a team of specialists from multiple disciplines, including the Orlando Health Heart & Vascular Institute, podiatry, internal medicine, wound care, and infectious disease. This approach will ensure that patients receive the highest level of care tailored to their specific needs.
According to the Amputee Coalition, more than 5.6 million Americans live with limb loss or limb differences. Among those, 40% suffer from vascular disease, and 57% have diabetes, both of which are common causes of critical limb-threatening conditions. The goal of the Limb Preservation Program is to prevent limb loss by effectively managing these underlying health issues before they require drastic measures like amputation.
Alicia Howe, associate chief operating officer of Orlando Health — Health Central Hospital, states, “By providing comprehensive preventative care, we can help improve patient outcomes and significantly reduce amputation rates in this vulnerable population.”
Personalized Care and Support Through the Limb Preservation Program
The program will offer expert consultations and individualized care plans, addressing each patient’s unique health needs. Along with medical treatment, the program provides essential education, disease management, and acute care support. Patients will also have access to rehabilitation services to aid in their recovery.
Kevin Claudeanos, a vascular surgeon and leader of the program, is excited about the new initiative. He says, “This Limb Preservation Program represents a unique, innovative approach to limb salvage that will greatly benefit the Orlando community.”
