STI Rates Slowing Down In Florida

STI Rates

After years of steadily rising numbers, STI rates in the U.S. and Florida are finally slowing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 2.4 million sexually transmitted infections in 2023. While this figure remains high, it represents a significant shift after decades of growth.

In Central Florida, the trend is similar. Orange County, which saw a peak of 17,000 cases in 2021, experienced a 4% decrease in 2023, according to the Florida Department of Health. Experts credit the decline to expanded testing and newer treatment options.

Why STI Rates Are Declining

One reason for slowing STI rates is improved access to testing. FDA-approved self-testing kits for chlamydia and gonorrhea became widely available last year, with syphilis kits introduced earlier in 2023. These tools make early detection easier and more convenient.

Doxycycline, often called the “new morning-after pill,” has also been a breakthrough in prevention. This antibiotic, taken after potential exposure, helps prevent infections from developing. Dr. Christine Greves of Orlando Health noted that doxycycline has been a major factor in reducing cases.

Healthcare providers are also focusing on education and preventive measures. Dr. Greves encourages patients to get tested before starting a new relationship and to follow up regularly. This proactive approach has been crucial in addressing the spread of STIs.

Challenges in Addressing STI Rates

Despite these improvements, STI rates remain alarmingly high in certain groups, including Black, Hispanic, and LGBTQ+ communities, as well as Native Americans. These disparities are often tied to barriers like poverty, limited access to healthcare, and stigma surrounding sexual health.

The decline in infections is a positive sign, but public health officials warn that ongoing efforts are needed. Temporary increases in public health funding have played a vital role, but budget cuts could undermine progress.

While the slowing of STI rates offers hope, maintaining this momentum in 2024 and beyond will require sustained investment and commitment to addressing health inequities.
