The state of Florida has granted USF Health $10 million to establish the Florida Center for Emergency Medical Services (FLCEMS). This new initiative, located at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) in Tampa, solidifies USF Health’s presence in the growing Tampa Medical and Research District.

USF Health Advances Emergency Medical Services

The Florida Center for Emergency Medical Services will advance emergency care through innovative research, modernized education, and partnerships with community organizations. Funded by a four-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the Florida Department of Health, the center will focus on enhancing prehospital care, refining EMS training programs, and developing advanced disaster response strategies.

Additionally, the FLCEMS will serve as a policy and workforce hub, advising government officials, agencies, and communities on improving EMS services and addressing workforce challenges statewide.

Strengthening Florida’s EMS Workforce

“This center will utilize USF Health’s expertise to improve the recruitment, training, and resilience of EMTs and paramedics across Florida,” said Dr. Jason Wilson, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. He emphasized the collaboration between USF Health, Tampa General Hospital, and the Florida Department of Health as critical to improving EMS systems and public safety.

Dr. Bruce Moeller, executive director of the center, noted that the initiative is dedicated to strengthening emergency medical services. “Our mission is to equip first responders with the tools and support they need to effectively serve their communities while enhancing the long-term sustainability of EMS programs,” he said.

Dr. Angus Jameson, state EMS medical director, highlighted USF Health’s legacy of addressing workforce challenges. “The Florida Center for EMS unites experts in emergency medicine, public health, education, and business to find practical solutions for first responders and the Floridians they serve,” he said.

USF Health’s leadership in emergency medical services continues to shape innovative approaches that benefit first responders and the broader community.
