USF Health College Appoints Dr. Sten Vermund As New Dean

The University of South Florida (USF) is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Sten Vermund, MD, PhD, as the new dean of the USF Health College of Public Health. Dr. Vermund, known for his extensive expertise in infectious disease epidemiology and prevention, will begin his role in January 2025.

New Leadership At USF Health College

Dr. Vermund will take on the positions of Distinguished University Health Professor, senior associate vice president of USF Health, and dean of the USF Health College of Public Health. This college is a vital part of the USF Health system, encompassing about 4,700 students and more than 400 faculty and support staff. His leadership is anticipated to advance the college’s mission significantly.

Prior to joining USF, Dr. Vermund served as the Anna M.R. Lauder Professor of Public Health and dean at the Yale School of Public Health from 2017 to 2022. During his time at Yale, he led the school through its most notable rise in national rankings in over a decade and secured considerable development funds. He also spearheaded the expansion of the school’s Office of Public Health Practice, enhancing student support and internship opportunities.

Accomplished Expert In Infectious Disease And Pediatrics

Dr. Vermund brings a wealth of experience in infectious disease epidemiology and pediatrics. He has authored over 600 peer-reviewed articles and serves on the editorial boards of several prominent academic journals. His research focuses on diseases in resource-limited areas, including HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, COVID-19, and parasitic diseases. His leadership in global health initiatives includes roles with the Adolescent Medicine HIV/AIDS Research Network and the NIH Prevention Trials Network.

Before his tenure at Yale, Dr. Vermund was vice president for global health at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and chief of the epidemiology branch at the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases/Division of AIDS.

Dr. Vermund is enthusiastic about joining the USF Health College and looks forward to collaborating with faculty from both the College of Public Health and the Morsani College of Medicine. “It is a privilege to become part of USF and contribute to training the next generation of leaders in public and global health,” he stated. His appointment promises a new era of growth and excellence for the USF Health College of Public Health.

Dr. Vermund earned his Bachelor of Arts in human biology from Stanford University, his MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a doctorate in epidemiology from Columbia University. He completed his pediatric training at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and is married to Pilar Vargas, MD, PhD. They have two adult sons.
