TGH Behavioral Health Hospital is revolutionizing access to top-notch care and enhancing Florida’s healthcare workforce. A new state law has recognized TGH Behavioral Health Hospital as one of Florida's first four behavioral health teaching hospitals. Additionally, this law establishes the Florida Center for Behavioral Health Workforce at the University of South Florida’s Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute.

On May 13, Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and the University of South Florida (USF) celebrated this achievement with notable figures including Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, Senator Jim Boyd, and Senator Darryl Rouson. Leaders from TGH and USF participated in a ceremony where they signed a beam for the new TGH Behavioral Health Hospital building.

Growth Of TGH Behavioral Health

The TGH Behavioral Health Hospital, now under construction, marks a significant advancement in addressing the shortage of behavioral health services and professionals. “Tampa General is committed to transforming health care through innovation," stated John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General. "This new designation allows TGH Behavioral Health Hospital to offer academic-based, world-class care and essential learning opportunities for medical students and residents."

Senate Bill 330, sponsored by Senators Boyd and Rouson, was signed into law by the Governor and named Tampa General in partnership with USF Health as one of Florida's first behavioral health teaching hospitals. This initiative aims to meet the rising demand for behavioral health services and train future providers.

The Future Of Behavioral Health At TGH

Opening in 2025, the TGH Behavioral Health Hospital will provide specialized, personalized care for various mental health conditions. Partnering with Lifepoint Behavioral Health, TGH ensures compassionate care, while USF Health’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences will deliver comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services.

USF President Rhea Law highlighted the university's pivotal role: “USF is uniquely equipped to address the growing need for behavioral health services. Together with Tampa General Hospital, we are dedicated to finding bold solutions for our communities’ future.”

The Florida Center for Behavioral Health Workforce at USF will focus on recruiting and retaining professionals in behavioral health. This initiative supports Florida’s behavioral health systems by integrating care, education, and research, thereby enhancing the state’s capacity to provide high-quality mental health services.

Located at 1303 West Kennedy Boulevard, the TGH Behavioral Health Hospital will be a key component of the Tampa Medical and Research District. The 83,000-square-foot facility with 96 inpatient beds is set to play a crucial role in addressing the increasing demand for mental health services in Florida.
