In an exciting development for the Central Florida region, a brand-new medical school is set to open its doors in Horizon West this August. The Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM), a $200 million project, aims to address the growing demand for physicians and alleviate the nationwide and local physician labor shortage.

A Game-Changer For The Area

"A medical school will be a game-changer in this area," said Dr. Robert Hasty, the dean of OCOM. The $75 million, 25-acre campus will feature state-of-the-art research labs, group rooms, and top-notch facilities to train the next generation of medical professionals.

Through a strategic partnership with AdventHealth University, OCOM will guarantee admission interviews for the university's pre-med students. Dr. Anael Santos, chair of the health and biomedical sciences department at AdventHealth University, expressed excitement about this opportunity, stating, "They're opening up and making available the admission interview for our students, which is challenging getting into medical school."

Addressing The Physician Shortage

The establishment of this new medical school is a significant step towards addressing the physician shortage in Central Florida and nationwide. Dr. Hasty emphasized, "Nationally, there is a physician shortage in America, and Central Florida is probably one of the epicenters for great projected physician shortage needs."

One of the aspiring medical students eagerly awaiting the opportunity to apply to OCOM is Axel Mendez, a pre-med student at AdventHealth University. Inspired by a joyful doctor who positively impacted his mother's clinic, Mendez dreams of becoming a cardiologist. "I really want to apply because I'd love to stay in the area," he said, expressing his fondness for Orlando.

A Promising Future

The inaugural class of 97 medical students will commence their studies at OCOM in August, marking the beginning of a promising future for the region's healthcare landscape. Funded by billionaire Dr. Kiran C. Patel, who recognized the need for more medical professionals in the area, OCOM is poised to make a significant impact on the community.

With its state-of-the-art facilities, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to addressing the physician shortage, the new medical school in Horizon West is set to become a beacon of hope for aspiring medical professionals and patients alike.
