Summary of Responsibilities:
The ophthalmic technician is responsible for proper documentation, caring patient interaction and the overall success of the clinic flow. This individual provides good judgement in the coordination of all practice activities that contribute to the successful performance of this role.


List of Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Verifies patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history, and confirming purpose of visit.
  • Able to demonstrate skill, knowledge and accuracy using clinical instruments. Displays ability to perform patient work up based on chief complaint and patient history. Knowledge and ability to perform proper clinical chart documentation.
  • Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records; completing diagnostic coding and procedure coding; keeping patient information confidential.
  • Counsels patients by transmitting Physician’s orders, use of drops, drugs and questions about surgery.
  • Assist with in office procedures such as laser surgeries and ocular injections.
  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; asking for repairs if necessary.
  • Prepares patients for ophthalmology examination by dilating their pupils; reporting patient history summary, recording changes in visual acuity, checking pressure via applanation tonometry and checking blood pressure.
  • Keeps pace with co-workers, considered by the physicians, managers and teammates to be “pulling his/her own weight”
  • Adeptly checks condition of patient’s eyes by observing pupils, muscle, visual acuity, extraocular movements.
  • Adeptly conducts confrontational visual fields, fluorescein angiography, and OCT testing.
  • Shows initiative, demonstrates dependability and accepts direction from qualified sources.
  • Displays commitment and involvement and interacts well with co-workers.
  • Utilizes patient chart on an as needed basis, accessing only information related to treatment, payment, and health operations.
  • Adheres to the company’s HIPAA, OSHA, and Compliance regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Demonstrated Skills:

  • Requires accuracy, thoroughness, and an understanding of insurance, copay and referral procedures.
  • Requires ability to work as a team member.
  • Requires multitasking in a fast-paced setting.
  • Requires skilled use of fax and copier machines, word processing software and general computer operating skills.
  • Requires friendly, professional and a patient demeanor.

  • Displays consistent professionalism, common courtesy, and a positive rapport towards coworkers and patients.
  • Cooperates with supervisory staff and physicians.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in job assignment. Keeps up to date with required compliance training, certifications, and demonstrates initiative in accomplishing practice goals.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisor about schedule or any special needs.
  • Flexible hours required.
  • Travel required.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to sit, stand, reach, and bend repeatedly during the day.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both in-person and on the telephone.
  • Must be able to accurately process and enter data into the appropriate computer software.
  • Must have manual dexterity to file.
